<\/span><\/p>\n

The ants are in the kitchen again,
\nthe bin smells, the cornices rot,
\nthe garden is dying. Somewhere
\nthe omphalos waits for me.
\nI am sure this key I have opens
\nthe secret vault; I must try it
\nin all locks. The field of locks to try
\nstretches to the horizon;
\nit covers the earth. But one day
\n           there will be a star
\namong stars in the dark sky, and I will know it,
\nit will be the one I have waited for.
\nIs there not something
\nthat is coming for me? A card
\nin the deck of the days of a life,
\n           which is dealt
\nand dealt.
\nThe milk sours; animals hate me.
\nIs it here, beneath this
\nunwashed plate? In this
\nfurled sock? In the place,
\nalready checked, where a car key
\nmay be found, but not
\ntill much later,
\nparty started, train
\n           missed?
\n<\/p>

Poet's Statement: Approaching mid-life, I am trying to let go of the fantasy that if I just get over this one last hill, that will be the last of my problems and everything will be easy. Or if it isn\u2019t this hill, then surely it\u2019s the next one. One day I will empty the bins and they will stay empty. (Also, one day I will pass through some invisible membrane of writerly success and my work will no longer be rejected \u2013 ha.) In fact everything is always already rotting, falling to chaos, including me, and the supply of problems is limitless. In the time it takes to dust something, more dust settles than the mind can comprehend.
\n<\/span>
\nI learned the glorious word omphalos<\/em> from Seamus Heaney as an undergrad. One couldn\u2019t possibly get away with using it more than once in one\u2019s career, and I am honoured to have blown my wad in Barrow Street<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/span>\n
