the huge flowers<\/span>
lifting their wings<\/span>
to fly off<\/span><\/p>\n

as snowy egrets \u2013<\/span>
that\u2019s how I see<\/span>
my mother now.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

All it takes is a trick<\/span>
of moonlight, a voyage<\/span>
on the great river.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Who knows when she\u2019ll appear<\/span>
in her nightdress<\/span>
waving from the bank<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

or as that butterfly<\/span>
drinking the tears<\/span>
from a caiman\u2019s eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I like to believe<\/span>
she rose from the flower<\/span>
of her body and flew<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

to the River of Milk<\/span>
and found peace there,<\/span>
that the plume hunters<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

didn\u2019t cut off her wings<\/span>
and throw her back in<\/span>
to swim with only her legs.<\/span><\/p>\n
