These homages to friends and passing strangers, to everyday souls\u2014being in and of the larger world\u2014transport us to a fidelity that matters in our daily lives. It does not smell<br \/>\nof sweat and stable, does not snort at the wolf in the brush<br \/>\nand twitch its ears. A unicorn does not get dirty,<br \/>\nkick up mud when it runs. I know that I would throw<br \/>\nmy leg over a bareback horse sooner than I\u2019d step<br \/>\ninto the stirrup of a saddled unicorn. For spite, I\u2019d shoot<br \/>\nand slaughter one, roast choice bits over a fire, and hang<br \/>\nits horn from my belt, just to outrage the legions<br \/>\nof tourists of the imagination, the kind who flock<br \/>\nto s\u00e9ances, or invite Rasputin to tea. A unicorn<br \/>\nis impossibly cute, it doesn\u2019t shit or rub its rump against a tree.<br \/>\nBut a horse, my god, can swing its neck around at a dog\u2019s yip<br \/>\nand break your jaw, can brain you with a hoof.<br \/>\nIt makes the ground shake.
